FUJIWARA KENNEN: A SUPERB SASHIMONO WOOD KAZARIBAKO (ORNAMENTAL BOX) By Fujiwara Kennen (born 1950), seal Ken, signed to the tomobako Kennen with seal Kennen Japan, late 20th century, Heisei period (1989-2019) Finely constructed in the traditional sashimono technique, the rectangular box comprising two stacked compartments and a fitted cover. The richly figured keyaki (Japanese zelkova) wood displays an attractive natural grain with prominent burl-like markings, enhanced by a lustrous fuki-urushi (wiped-lacquer) finish. The underside impressed with the seal NEN. SIZE 28.6 x 16 x 15 cm With a wood tomobako inscribed, 欅拭漆飾箱 keyaki fukiurushi kazaribako [an ornamental box, made in keyaki (elm) wood, and wiped-lacquer finish, signed 建然Kennen with seal mark Kennen]. Fujikawa Kennen (born 1950) is a regular participant in the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition). Most recently, he exhibited at the 75th edition of the exhibition in 2025, presenting a ten-sided box crafted from pine wood. His works are held in institutional collections, including the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art. Sashimono refers to the traditional Japanese art of constructing wooden boxes and furniture through precisely cut joints, generally without the use of nails or other metal fittings. The technique requires exceptional accuracy, as the individual components must fit seamlessly together while allowing the natural grain and character of the wood to remain the principal decorative feature.
