Ɏ A FINE SHIBAYAMA-STYLE INLAID LACQUER ‘SEASONAL FLOWERS’ BASIN Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely crafted, of circular form, with deep, gently rounded sides gently tapering toward a flat base, supported on three ivory feet carved as beasts masks with reish fungi profiles, and rising to a slightly incurved rim, fitted with a pair of ivory handles in the shape of further mythical beast heads. The exterior bearing a luminous kinji ground, elaborately decorated with gold and dark-brown takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl and coral, to depict blossoming camellias (tsubaki) and bellflowers (kikyo) among leafy stems and verdant grasses, accompanied by fluttering butterflies. The interior of the basin, as well as its underside, finished in vibrant nashiji. EUR 13,700 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
