A FINE AND RARE INLAID LACQUER AND METAL ‘DRAGONS AMONG CLOUDS’ KORO (INCENSE BURNER) Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912) Of quatre-lobed form, the body rising from a gently spreading foot to a waisted neck and broad rim, the exterior finished in a highly polished kinji ground and finely decorated in red, silver, and gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The central composition depicts two powerful sinuous dragons twisting among scrolling clouds, their elongated bodies covered in finely rendered scales, with fierce expressions, curling whiskers, sharp claws, and prominent horns. The sides are fitted with silver and gilt metal dragon-form handles in the style of menuki. The waisted neck is decorated with a geometric hanabishi pattern beneath a key-fret border, while the interior is fitted with a removable metal lining for the safe burning of incense.
