A SMALL GOLD LACQUER ‘CRAWLING INFANT’ INCENSE TRAY (KOBON) Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of oblong form with irregularly lobed edges, the shallow, gently rounded sides rising to a subtly projecting rim. The interior is finely decorated in gold takamaki-e on a dense nashiji ground, further enriched with kirigane, depicting a youthful karako crawling in pursuit of a butterfly while holding a gunbai fan. He is dressed in voluminous robes and shown beneath the blossoming branches of a plum tree. The underside is exquisitely polished and finished in radiant nashiji. LENGTH 12.1 cm
