Ɏ SHOKOSAI: A FINE LACQUER TORTOISESHELL PLATE DEPICTING A COCKEREL AND HEN By Shokosai, signed Shokosai Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of circular form, rising from an inverted ring foot to gently rounded sides, the natural tortoiseshell ground finely decorated in gold, silver, red, and black takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The central composition depicts a proud cockerel and hen accompanied by two chicks, set among delicate foliage, the finely executed lacquerwork capturing the lively character of the birds and the richness of their plumage. Signed to the underside SHOKOSAI. DIAMETER 15.5 cm Shokosai is recorded in Edward A. Wrangham and Joe Earle (eds.), The Index of Inro Artists (1995), p. 251, as an inro decorator active during the Meiji period. Although primarily known for inro, he also produced larger lacquer works, such as the present plate, demonstrating the versatility of Meiji lacquer artists in adapting traditional techniques to new formats.
