A FINE CLAM-SHAPED GOLD LACQUER KOGO (INCENSE BOX) Japan, 19th century, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912) In the shape of a hamaguri clam, bearing a kinji ground finely decorated with red, silver, and gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid depicts a beautiful scene with two boats laden with autumnal flowers including bush clover and chrysanthemums, drifting on a lake beneath a pine tree, with small huts along the shore, the ground finely embellished with e-nashiji. The underside is supported on two additional clams serving as feet and features a third clam rendered in takamaki-e. The interior is finished in nashiji with gold fundame rims SIZE 8.8 x 11.6 cm With a wood tomobako (storage box).
