A SUPERB LACQUER ‘QUAIL CAGE’ KOGO (INCENSE BOX) Japan, 19th century Shaped as a cylindrical birdcage and raised on three lobed feet, the exterior bearing a luminous kinji ground, exquisitely decorated in gold takamaki-e, to depict a group of quails within the cage, their plumage rendered with remarkable finesse. The lower section of the cage adorned with various leafy peony sprays, masterfully executed in gold and iro-e hiramaki-e, emulating the appearance of cloisonné, while the feet are decorated with gyobu-nashiji. The top of the cover finely embellished with a gold netting pattern worked in, centered by a knop, the interior finished with nashiji and gold fundame rims.
