A FINE AND RARE ‘SILK MOTH’ LACQUER KOGO (INCENSE BOX) Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) In the shape of a silk moth with two cocoons, the insect bearing a kinji ground finely decorated in takamaki-e and hiramaki-e and the cocoons of brown textured lacquer. The depiction of the inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid extends to the sides with silk threads in gold hiramaki-e. The underside and interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims. SIZE 3 x 3.9 x 8 cm With a silk storage box. The depiction of the silk moth in this kogo carries deep cultural significance in Japan, where silk production has long been tied to both the nation's artistic and economic development. The intricate relationship between nature, craftsmanship, and cultural trade is embodied in the symbolism of the silk moth, which represents the ancient practices of sericulture and textile manufacturing. Silk was a cornerstone of Japan’s cultural and economic exchanges, especially during the Meiji period, where the production and trade of silk greatly influenced international relations and commerce.
