KANSHOSAI TOYO: A SUPERB TOGIDASHI LACQUER PORTABLE HANAGAMIDAI (COSMETIC CABINET) By Kanshosai Toyo (Iizuka Toyo I), signed Kanshosai with kakihan Japan, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely crafted, the cabinet, supported on short lobed feet, each fitted with silver mountings, comprises a large lower drawer surmounted by two smaller side drawers, all set with silver loop handles in the form of arrowroot (kuzu) crests, with an open tray-form shelf above them, its sides gently inclined upwards with chamfered edges and mounted with a silver rim. The hanagamidai is exquisitely decorated in gold and silver togidashi maki-e and e-nashiji, with an all-over design of leafy ivy branches emerging through nocturnal mist under the crescent moon, which casts its light across the composition on the upper tray. The interiors of the drawers beautifully finished in luminous e-nashiji with gold fundame rims. Signed to the back KANSHOSAI and with the artist's distinct kakihan. SIZE 24.8 x 27.2 x 20.6 cm Iizuka (Kanshosai) Toyo was a distinguished lacquerer and inro decorator active in Edo during the second half of the eighteenth century.
