A SMALL BLACK AND GOLD LACQUER ‘GOLDEN AUTUMN’ KODANSU (INCENSE CABINET) Japan, 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of rectangular form with recessed edges, each side finely polished to a lustrous black-lacquer ground and elaborately decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with various autumnal scenes, including gourds and grapevines suspended from leafy branches, amid butterflies and dragonflies in flight. The two doors to the front are further embellished with geese beside a small pond surrounded by seasonal flowers and grasses. Fitted with silver hinges, the doors open to reveal three small drawers for the storage of incense, each fitted with a pinecone-shaped pull. The drawer fronts and inner faces of the doors are decorated with an array of gold insects, including crickets, spiders, dragonflies, and wasps. The interiors are finished in luminous nashiji with gold fundame rims. With a key.
