A FINE BLACK AND GOLD LACQUER KODANSU (INCENSE CABINET) Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Rectangular in form with recessed edges, decorated with golden scrolling tendrils, each side bearing a matte black lacquer ground, embellished in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, to depict a lush pine tree accompanied by blooming chrysanthemums and other blossoms with leafy stems entwined among its gnarled trunk. The door of the cabinet, fitted with gilt brass hinges and mounts engraved with scrolling florets, conceals three small drawers, each with a kiku loop handle. Each drawer, as well as the reverse of the door, is finished in lustrous roiro lacquer with gold fundame rims. The kodansu is surmounted by a handle on the upper face, with mounts of similarly stylized chrysanthemum form.
