A FINE LACQUER SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) WITH A MOONLIT LANDSCAPE AND TEA HOUSE Japan, 20th century, Showa period (1926–1989) Of upright rectangular form with softly rounded corners, the exterior finished in lustrous roiro lacquer and finely decorated in red, gold, and black takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, further embellished with gold flakes, fine kinpun, and kirigane. The overhanging cover (kabusebuta) is decorated with a circular golden moon-shaped reserve enclosing a richly detailed tscene. A pavilion stands beside a flowing stream beneath a pine tree, with a garden lantern to one side. One window is opened to reveal a figure engaged in the refined practice of the tea ceremony, creating an intimate glimpse into a secluded interior. The interior is finished in lustrous roiro lacquer with red kinpun decoration and fitted with the original writing implements, including a brush (fude), an inscribed inkstick, and an inkstone (suzuri).
