AN ELEGANT SHELL-INLAID LACQUER ‘FLOWER BASKET’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of rounded rectangular form, fitted with an overhanging cover, the exterior bearing a lustrous roiro ground, finely decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, further enriched with e-nashiji, gold kirigane flakes, and mother-of-pearl inlay, to depict an ikebana basket containing a lush arrangement of chrysanthemums and peonies, with an arched handle from which it is suspended by a cord with two hanging tassels, nearby, a butterfly is shown in flight. The interior of the cover further decorated with stylized chrysanthemum blossoms. The writing box fitted with a rectangular inkstone (suzuri) with edges decorated in gold fundame, together with a small oval silver water dropper. SIZE 24.3 x 16.9 x 4.1 cm With a wood tomobako (storage box), inscribed Hanakago makie, on-suzuribako ichi 花籠蒔繪、御硯箱一 [One item, the inkstone writing box, with the design of flower basket].
