A SUPERB LACQUER SET OF A BUNKO (DOCUMENT BOX) AND SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) DEPICTING THE THIRTY-SIX POETIC IMMORTALS Japan, 19th century, late Edo period (1615–1868) to Meiji period (1868–1912) Each of rectangular form with rounded edges, the surfaces finished in lustrous fundame and exquisitely decorated in gold, black, red, and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, further enriched with pewter and aogai inlays. The flush-fitting cover (inrobuta) of the bunko is scattered with nineteen poem cards, each bearing the portrait and name of a celebrated poet, together with verses drawn from the Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each) and the Kokin Wakashu. Among those represented are Oe no Chisato, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, Mibu no Tadamine, Murasaki Shikibu, and Emperor Tenji. The overhanging cover (kabusebuta) of the suzuribako is similarly decorated with nine poem cards, forming a closely related companion composition. The interiors of both covers are embellished with a boat traversing stylized waves, rendered in mother-of-pearl against a fundame ground and flanked by boldly applied pewter rocks. The suzuribako is fitted with a removable baseboard (ita) containing the original writing implements: a metal chrysanthemum-form water dropper (suiteki), two brushes (fude), and an inkstone (suzuri).
