KAN: AN INLAID AND LACQUERED WOOD ‘BUDDHIST ACCOUTREMENTS’ SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) WITH INTEGRATED RYOSHIBAKO (DOCUMENT BOX) By Ogawa Haritsu (1664-1747) or a close follower, sealed Kan Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of upright rectangular form, the kiri (paulownia) wood of attractive grain and color, with rounded edges finished in gold and black lacquer. The sides and cover are richly inlaid with glazed ceramics and thick iro-e takamaki-e, further embellished with antler, mother-of-pearl, and malachite, depicting various Buddhist accoutrements including a mokugyo (wooden temple drum) with dragon-head terminals and beater, and a hossu (fly whisk), all amid falling lotus petals. The interior is finished in reddish-brown lacquer and fitted with a removable suzuribako tray housing the original implements: a metal kiku-form water dropper (suiteki) and an inkstone (suzuri). Below the tray is the space designated for documents and papers. Sealed to the side in green ceramic KAN. SIZE 9.2 x 22.7 x 12.3 cm With a wood tomobako (storage box). Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747) specialized in the combination of unusual materials such as pottery, bone, lacquer, shell, and wood. His sophisticated taste and modern approach appealed to literati circles in the eighteenth century, and he served as both artist and artistic adviser to the Daimyo Tsugaru Nobuhisa. He had many followers and pupils, and his original style has been adapted throughout the centuries.
