Shibata Akira, born in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture in 1942, graduated from Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics High School and joined Ando Cloisonné Company, founded in 1880. His works employ the yusen (wire) technique, with all stages—design, substrate preparation, pattern application, glazing, firing, and polishing—carried out by himself. Since 1970, he has been regularly selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, receiving awards and serving as a judge, and is recognized as one of Japan’s leading cloisonné enamel artists.
