SHIBATA AKIRA: A FINE CLOISONNÉ ‘STREAM’ FLOWER VASE By Shibata Akira (b. 1942), sealed Akira Japan, 2013 Of lenticular cross-section, the sides finely worked with dark blue, white, and pale gray waves, the mouth, edges, and base lined in silver, and the base with the artist’s signature AKIRA to the base. HEIGHT 26.2 cm WEIGHT 1,800 g With the original wood tomobako (storage box) inscribed, ‘Yusen Shippo Kaki “ryu” [Wire-cloisonné enamel flower vase “stream”]’, signed ‘Akira saku [made by Akira]’, with the artist’s seal to the top, and a label to the side inscribed, ‘Shibata Akira, Wire-cloisonné enamel flower vase “stream”, 50, made in 2013’; with a leaflet detailing the artist’s career in Japanese, a Japanese label, and a photo. Shibata Akira, born in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture in 1942, graduated from Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics High School and joined Ando Cloisonné Company, founded in 1880. His works employ the yusen (wire) technique, with all stages—design, substrate preparation, pattern application, glazing, firing, and polishing—carried out by himself. Since 1970, he has been regularly selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, receiving awards and serving as a judge, and is recognized as one of Japan’s leading cloisonné enamel artists.
