A RARE LIME AND GREEN CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL ‘KIRI AND KARAKUSA’ BOX AND COVER By the workshop of Ando Jubei (1876-1953), sealed with the Ando company mark Japan, first half of the 20th century, Taisho (1912-1926) to Showa era (1926-1989) Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the exterior finely decorated in varying shades of moss-green within gilt wire against a pale lime-yellow ground, to depict an arrangement of stylized paulownia (kiri) leaves interspersed with bellflowers (kikyo) and scrolling leafy vines (karakusa). The interior enameled in dark aubergine and fitted with silver rims. Sealed to the underside with the Ando company mark in silver wire. HEIGHT 2.5 cm, LENGTH 10.1 cm WEIGHT 210.1 g Ando Jubei (1876–1953) was a Japanese cloisonné artist from Nagoya. Along with Hayashi Kodenji, he played a leading role in the enameling industry in the late Meiji era. Ando, Namikawa Yasuyuki, and Namikawa Sosuke are considered the three artists whose technical innovations brought in the ‘Golden Age’ for Japanese cloisonné in the late 19th century. Ando Jubei was the most prolific creator of presentation wares in the Meiji period, whose studio still thrives in Nagoya, producing works commissioned by members of the Imperial Family for presentation to foreign dignitaries, and exhibiting them at the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910.
