KUMENO TEITARO: A FINE GINBARI CLOISONNÉ ‘DRAGON AND WAVES’ VASE By the Kumeno Teitaro Workshop, sealed Kume and signed Kumeno zo Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of ovoid form, raised on a short circular silver foot and rising to a gently waisted neck with a flaring mouth, surmounted by a flat silver rim. The body is masterfully decorated in a combination of translucent enamels and ginbari (silver foil) enamels, depicting a dragon emerging from billowing smoke, rising above crashing waves on a hammered silver foil ground. The exquisite use of tomei-shippo (transparent cloisonné) allows the dragon to emerge vibrantly against the subtle waves and clouds. The base is sealed kume, while the side bears a second signature KUMENO zo [made by Kumeno] within an oblong reserve. HEIGHT 15.8 cm WEIGHT 213 g Kumeno Teitaro (1861-1939) gained widespread recognition for his exquisite ginbari enamels. In 1882, he established his own studio and showcased his works at numerous national and international exhibitions. Notably, he participated in exhibitions such as Nuremberg in 1885, Paris in 1889 (earning a silver medal), and Chicago in 1893. His exceptional craftsmanship quality was acknowledged with a 'grand prize' at St. Louis in 1904 and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
