HAYASHI SHOTARO: A LARGE RED SHINO-GLAZED VASE By Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947), signed Sho Japan, Heisei period (1989–2019) Masterfully modeled, the faceted body gently tapering toward the base and rising to rounded shoulders, surmounted by a slender neck and everted mouth with a thickly applied rim. The surface covered in a thick layer of white Shino glaze, richly textured with characteristic bubbling, fissures, and organic raised formations through which warm red-orange tones emerge. The deeply textured glaze creates a striking cerebriform effect, resembling the intricate convolutions of a natural organic surface and highlighting the expressive qualities of the Shino tradition. The underside signed with the artist’s mark SHO. HEIGHT 36.3 cm, WIDTH 15.5 cm Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) is a leading figure in contemporary Mino ceramics, celebrated for his revival of traditional Shino and Oribe techniques and for his innovative development of the rare Manyo glaze. Born in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, he studied under his elder brother Hayashi Kotaro and established his own kiln in 1974. His work has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Mino Ceramics Award, Shoroku Award, and Kobei Award, securing his position as one of the important contemporary interpreters of the Mino ceramic tradition.
