SAKATA JINNAI: A MASSIVE CARVED BROWN-GLAZED EARTHENWARE DISH Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943), unsigned Japan, 20th century, late Showa period (1926-1989) Massively potted and of circular form, the broad, shallow sides gently rounded above a short straight foot and rising to a subtly everted rim. The interior is boldly carved with an abstract composition of geometric motifs arranged in broad, undulating bands, creating a dynamic interplay of line, texture, and negative space. The dish is covered overall in a richly variegated, rustic brown glaze suffused with olive-green tones, the glaze continuing over the exterior. The underside is left unglazed, revealing the warm, earthy ceramic body. DIAMETER 50.4 cm Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943, Tokyo) began his apprenticeship with the distinguished ceramist Kamoda Shoji in 1964, an experience that profoundly shaped his approach to form, surface, and material. In 1966, he established his own kiln in Kamiooba, Mashiko, where he developed a highly individual practice centered on black ware, carved surfaces, and sculptural ceramics. From 1987 onward, his work was presented in regular solo exhibitions at Takashimaya Nihonbashi, and in 1994 it was included in the inaugural exhibition of the New York Takashimaya Art Gallery. Sakata later extended his artistic practice beyond ceramics, exploring washi papermaking from 1995, glass from 2000, and LED-based works in his later career. His oeuvre draws deeply on the visual memory and material sensibility of Jomon culture, while continuously examining the tension between the everyday and the extraordinary.
