SUZUKI HACHIRO: A LARGE CRACKLE-GLAZED ‘RIPPED’ SETO WARE VASE, ENTITLED ‘ODE TO EARLY SPRING’ By Suzuki Hachiro (1915-2005), sealed by the artist Japan, Seto City, Taishi kiln, c. 1950s Published & Exhibited: Catalogue of the 7th Nitten Fine Arts Exhibition, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, 1952. Masterfully formed, the horizontally striated conical body, with slightly concave sides tapering toward a narrow foot, rising to an ample, circular mouth. The exterior distinctively covered with a thin, textured layer of finely crackled, cream-colored glaze, interrupted by large, tear-like, unglazed reserves that reveal the warm, earthy tone of the ceramic body beneath. The underside, left unglazed, stamped with the artist’s seal and bearing an affixed inscribed note. HEIGHT 32.9 cm, DIAMETER 39.7 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist. Suzuki Hachiro (1915-2005) was a pupil of the eminent kogei artist Fujii Tatsukichi (1881–1964). Prior to the Second World War, his works were exhibited at the Bunten, the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition, regarded in its time as the most authoritative state-sponsored juried salon for contemporary art in Japan. Between 1944 and 1945, he travelled to Manchuria to study pottery, and following the aftermath of hostilities, he participated in exhibitions of the reconstituted Nitten, the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition and the successor to the prewar Bunten, becoming the leading national platform for modern Japanese art in the postwar period. He subsequently broadened his artistic scope and was accepted into the National Modern Ceramics Exhibition and the Seto Ceramics Exhibition, among others, receiving numerous awards. His career culminated in his selection on five occasions for inclusion in the Modern Japanese Crafts exhibitions held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
