SUZUKI SANSEI: A PALE CELADON-GLAZED PORCELAIN VASE By Suzuki Sansei (b. 1936), sealed San Japan, Heisei period (1989-2019) Of angled bottle form, the compressed body raised on a short circular foot ring and rising to a wide, gently tapering, tall neck with a straight flaring mouth, covered overall in a pale blue glaze with scattered rust-red crackling. The underside impressed with the seal mark San and the foot ring left unglazed. HEIGHT 33.3 cm With a signed and inscribed wood tomobako (storage box) and a Japanese pamphlet with the biography of the artist. Suzuki Sansei (b. 1936) is a potter based in Kanagawa known for his mastery over traditional celadon ware. He trained under Kawamura Seizan (1890-1967) at the Kamakura Kiln before going on to build his own kiln Kozu in Kanagawa Prefecture. Kawamura’s influence on Suzuki’s work is palpable in their commitment to bringing traditional techniques to the modern ceramics connoisseur and their appreciation for subtle and muted aesthetic sensibilities. His highly refined, classical, light bluish-green glazes rival their Chinese Southern Song prototypes and have garnered him many awards.
