NONAKA TAKU: A SUPERB AND IMPOSING CLEAR-GLAZED PORCELAIN FLUTED VASE Nonaka Taku (b.1955), signed by the artist Japan, Heisei period (1989-2019) Brilliantly modeled, the slightly flattened spherical body, beautifully carved with vertical striations of varying width, subtly narrowing towards the upper section, resting on a reduced foot and rising to a short, gently tapered neck with a circular mouth. The surface entirely covered with a clear, transparent glaze that enhances the pristine, white-colored porcelain with a subtle, lustrous sheen. The base delicately incised with the artist’s seal. HEIGHT 32.7 cm, DIAMETER 35.2 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist. Nonaka Taku (b. 1955) is a Japanese ceramic artist based in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, where he works at Hiraku Kiln, Ureshino Town, within the Arita ware tradition. He is largely self-taught, though his formative development was shaped in part by the guidance of Ono Shoji from the time he joined Kozan kiln in 1975. His practice is primarily focused on dark, iron-rich glazed ceramics (tenmoku), historically associated with Song-dynasty tea bowls, and refined white porcelain (hakuji), through which he engages with classical East Asian ceramic vocabularies. Among his most distinctive works are yuteki-tenmoku tea bowls, which are noted for their technical complexity and extreme rarity of successful firing outcomes. Nonaka has received several national awards in recognition of his work, including the Mainichi Newspapers Prize (1981), the Minister of Education Prize (1983), and the Governor’s Prize at the Nishi-Nippon Ceramic Art Exhibition (1986). His work has been selected for major institutional exhibitions, including the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition and other significant regional presentations in Kyushu and Yamaguchi. In 2000, his ceramics were exhibited at the British Museum, and examples of his work remain in its permanent collection.
