† KIMURA ICHIRO: A PRESS-MOLDED GLAZED STONEWARE SQUARE BOTTLE VASE By Kimura Ichiro (1915-1978), sealed Ki Japan, mid-20th century, Showa period (1926-1989) Hand-pressed in a mold and well-formed, the square body set upon a straight foot, rising to a correspondingly straight neck with a pronounced rim. The exterior beautifully coated with an iron-colored glaze, decorated on its two principal faces with a leafy floral motif, each framed by bands finished in a finely crackled transparent slip that reveals the natural buff-colored ceramic beneath. The base, left unglazed, bears the seal KI. HEIGHT 18.5 cm Kimura Ichiro (1915–1978) apprenticed with Hamada Shoji from 1935 before founding his own kiln in 1947. He participated in major exhibitions throughout Japan, including the Tokyo National Museum in 1964, and the Mashiko Ceramic Art Museum held a retrospective of his work in 1998. While not widely known in the West, he is acknowledged within Japan as a preeminent master of the Mashiko ceramic tradition. Kimura received awards at the Japan Folk Art Exhibition, the Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition, the National Ceramics Exhibition, the Japan Industrial Exhibition, and the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
