HAYASHI SHOTARO: A MANYO-SHINO GLAZED ‘MOUNT FUJI’ VASE By Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947), signed with the artist’s mark Japan, late 20th-early 21st century Finely shaped, the faceted ovoid body gently curving toward the base and rising to a polyhedral neck with an oval mouth. The surface entirely coated in a warm orange-red hue, which permeates the blistered layer of Manyo-Shino glaze that fully envelops the piece. Characteristic bubbles and fissures articulate a scene of snow-capped Mount Fuji emerging in the first light of morning, an effect masterfully achieved through subtle variations in the color and density of the glaze, which stops just above the foot to reveal the ceramic body beneath. The underside signed with the artist’s mark. HEIGHT 29.4 cm With a signed and inscribed wood tomobako (storage box). The lid inscribed 万葉志野富士絵扁壺 Manyo Shino Fujie Henko [Manyo-style Shino Flattened Vase with a Mt. Fuji Design] and signed Shotaro with seal. Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) is a leading figure in contemporary Mino ceramics, celebrated for revitalizing the ancestral Shino and Oribe traditions and pioneering the rare Manyo glaze. After graduating high school, he initially pursued regular employment, but in 1967 returned to his native Toki City to assist his brother, the ceramist Hayashi Kotaro. Together, they became central figures in the revival of traditionally inspired ceramics from the Mino region of central Japan, long renowned as a center of ceramic production. Following his studies under Kotaro, Shotaro established his own studio and kiln in 1974, driven by a profound and early creative impulse. His emerging talent was swiftly recognized with the highest award at the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition in 1968. Subsequently, he has received numerous prestigious accolades at both regional and national exhibitions, including the Mino Ceramics Award, the Shoroku Award, and the Kobei Award, consolidating his position as a central figure in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
