ICHIKAWA KODO: A LARGE IRIDESCENT COPPER-RED-GLAZED BIZEN WARE ‘MOUNT FUJI’ VASE By Ichikawa Kodo (b. 1925), sealed Kodo Japan, Izumi kilns, Showa period (1926–1989) Exquisitely modeled, the voluminous spherical body gently tapering toward the foot and rising to a short, subtly narrowing neck with a circular mouth. The exterior is entirely enveloped in a brilliant copper-red glaze, enlivened by luminous iridescent flashes of green, blue, gold, and ochre, produced through the transformative effects of kiln firing. These richly variegated tones gather into softly undulating formations across the surface, one resembling the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji. The underside is left unglazed, revealing the warm earthen-colored ceramic body, and is impressed with the seal KODO. HEIGHT 33.2 cm, DIAMETER 36.1 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), inscribed by the artist. Ichikawa Kodo (b. 1925, Shimane Prefecture) is a Japanese ceramic artist based in Tottori Prefecture and known for his refined interpretations of traditional Japanese pottery. From the 1960s through the late 1980s, he received numerous awards at regional and national craft exhibitions, establishing a distinguished reputation within the field of modern Japanese ceramics. His oeuvre encompasses classical ceramic traditions including Shino, Oribe, and Karatsu wares, with a particular emphasis on kiln-induced color variation, expressive surface effects, and the inherent character of the clay and glaze.
