† ISEZAKI MITSURU: A BIZEN-STYLE STONEWARE FACETED FLOWER VASE By Isezaki Mitsuru (1934-2011), signed with the artist’s mark Japan, late 20th century, Showa (1926-1989) to Heisei period (1989-2019) Finely modeled, with a straight profile and an irregular hexagonal section, the exterior is boldly glazed in varying brown, ochre, and grayish tones, exhibiting a rough texture from dark sandy particles adhered across the surface of the vessel. The flat base incised with the artist’s mark. HEIGHT 18.7 cm Isezaki Mitsuru (1934-2011) was the eldest son of the renowned ceramic artist Isezaki Yozan (1902-1961) and the elder brother of Isezaki Jun (b. 1936), who was recognized as a Living National Treasure in 2004 for his mastery of traditional Bizen-yaki ceramics, one of the oldest and most esteemed ceramic arts in Japan, in which Mitsuru himself also excelled. He studied sculpture in the Art Department of Okayama University and turned his focus to ceramics in 1957, achieving sustained recognition for his artistic production through participation in numerous national exhibitions across more than four decades. His works appeared at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, the Contemporary Pottery Exhibitions at the Tokyo and Kyoto Museums of Modern Art, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and other prominent venues.
