† ISEZAKI MITSURU: A BIZEN-STYLE STONEWARE GUINOMI (SMALL TEA BOWL) By Isezaki Mitsuru (1934-2011), signed with the artist’s mark Japan, late Showa (1926-1989) to Heisei period (1989-2019) Finely hand-modeled, with deep sides gently narrowing toward a tapered foot, and wood-fired to achieve an attractive interplay of earthy brown tones and leaden hues resulting from the intentional high-temperature fusion of volatile ash with clay minerals during firing in the kiln. The surface further displaying a subtle ‘goma’ (sesame seed) effect, distinctive of the artist, produced by the whitish silica grains that also react with the ash. The recessed base incised with the artist’s mark. HEIGHT 5.4 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist. Isezaki Mitsuru (1934-2011) was the eldest son of the renowned ceramic artist Isezaki Yozan (1902-1961) and the elder brother of Isezaki Jun (b. 1936), who was recognized as a Living National Treasure in 2004 for his mastery of traditional Bizen-yaki ceramics, one of the oldest and most esteemed ceramic arts in Japan, in which Mitsuru himself also excelled. He studied sculpture in the Art Department of Okayama University and turned his focus to ceramics in 1957, achieving sustained recognition for his artistic production through participation in numerous national exhibitions across more than four decades. His works appeared at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, the Contemporary Pottery Exhibitions at the Tokyo and Kyoto Museums of Modern Art, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and other prominent venues. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
