拍品描述

RYUICHI KAKUREZAKI: A FINE HIDASUKI BIZEN-WARE ‘EARS’ VASE By Ryuichi Kakurezaki (b. 1950), signed with the artist’s mark Japan c. 2000, Heisei era (1989-2019) The earthenware vessel with a rounded, teardrop-form, gently tapering towards the top and flanked by two raised ear-form protrusions, decorated overall with a striking red matrix of organic, orange flame-like patterns. These irregular, intertwining lines wrap around the form, enhancing its natural aesthetic. With no applied glaze, the piece highlights the raw beauty of the clay and the subtle effects of the firing process, giving it an unrefined elegant character. The underside incised with the artist’s mark. WIDTH 28.5 cm, HEIGHT 26.5 cm With a signed and inscribed wood tomobako (storage box). Ryuichi Kakurezaki (b. 1950) is a renowned and highly respected Bizen artist, recognized for his innovative approach to traditional materials and techniques. While Kakurezaki works within the time-honored Bizen tradition, he has distinguished himself since the 1990s by incorporating what would historically be considered ‘waste clay’ into his pieces. This unconventional choice of materials produces intriguing results, blending the traditional with the avant-garde. Kakurezaki’s work has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Prize. His pieces are included in major museum collections worldwide, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Musée Tomo in Tokyo. He continues to exhibit regularly in Japan and internationally. After a long apprenticeship with Jun Isezaki (b. 1936), Kakurezaki established his own kiln in Isogami, Okayama Prefecture in 1985, where he has since become one of the foremost figures in contemporary Bizen pottery.
