† RAKU KEINYU (KICHIZAEMON XI): A BLACK-GLAZED RAKU WARE CHAWAN (TEA BOWL), ENTITLED ‘SOUND OF MOSS’ By Raku Keinyu, Kichizaemon XI (1817-1902), sealed by the artist Japan, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely hand-modeled, with gently undulating vertical sides and a sharply angled hip tapering toward the short, slightly tapered foot and rising to a gently incurved rim. The surface uniformly covered in a lustrous, thick, black glaze, with deliberate recesses exposing the ochre-colored ceramic beneath. The base sealed RAKU. HEIGHT 6.8 cm, DIAMETER 11.6 cm With the original silk carrying bag (shifuku) and wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist, named Koon [Sound of Moss] by the eleventh Omotesenke tea master, Rokurokusai. Raku Keinyu (1817-1902) was the third son of Naohachi Ogawa, a sake brewer from Tamba Province (present-day Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture). Born as Sokichi, he later took the name Yoshitsura, and at the age of eleven was adopted by Raku Tannyu, Kichizaemon X (1795-1854), subsequently marrying one of his daughters. At twenty-nine, he succeeded his adoptive father and master as head of the family and assumed the name Kichizaemon, later retiring at the age of fifty-five after an extensive and prolific career, among the most accomplished within the family. Keinyu also cultivated interests in poetry and calligraphy and was, above all, a devoted practitioner of the tea ceremony, receiving from Rokurokusai, the eleventh headmaster of the Omotesenke school, the highest title of Kaiden in recognition of his mastery. The Raku ware tradition began in the sixteenth century under the influence of the tea master Sen no Rikyu, widely regarded as the most important figure in the history of Japanese tea ceremony. During the construction of the Jurakudai palace in Kyoto, commissioned by the daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598), Rikyu worked with the tile maker Chojiro, who produced hand molded tea bowls in accordance with Rikyu ideals for the wabi-style tea ceremony. Hideyoshi later presented a seal bearing the Chinese character ‘raku’ to Jokei, the son of Chojiro. From this moment, Raku became the name of the family and of its ceramic production. For more than four centuries, the Raku family has largely preserved its core techniques and aesthetic principles. The method of forming the vessels and the process of firing remain essentially the same as at the origin of Raku ware. The name and the practice of Raku have been transmitted across successive generations, at times through adoption, to the present fifteenth head, Raku Jikinyu, Kichizaemon XV. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
