A POLYCHROME KUTANI PORCELAIN ‘SHISHI AND BALL’ KOGO (INCENSE BOX) Japan, 19th century Of elongated hexagonal form with a recessed oval interior, the fitted cover surmounted by a boldly modeled shishi seated on its haunches and clasping a brocade ball between its forepaws. The guardian lion is rendered with a compact, fur-covered body, an upright curling tail, and a finely articulated head with a fierce expression, bulging eyes, and open mouth. The box and cover are covered in a deep brick-red glaze, while the shishi is picked out in pale mint green, with blue and yellow accents to the brocade ball. The interior is applied with a finely crackled transparent glaze, while the underside remains unglazed. HEIGHT 7.7 cm, LENGTH 6.4 cm
