AOYAMA SHUNKO: AN AWATA WARE CERAMIC ‘FEATHERED QUAIL’ KOGO (INCENSE BOX) By Aoyama Shunko, sealed Shunko 春光 Japan, Kyoto, Rakuto kiln, late Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely modeled, the bird resting calmly, with its rounded body surmounted by a gently raised head with a small beak. The exterior carefully painted with dark underglaze pigments benath a clear transparent glaze to render the delicate plumage of the animal, with finely dotted eyes and a yellow beak. The interior richly lined with gold foil. The underside left unglazed, revealing the buff-colored ceramic body beneath, stamped SHUNKO. The incense box containing two miniature carved figures depicting Daikoku and Ebisu standing on a small wood stand. HEIGHT 5.4 cm, LENGTH 5.9 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako). The exterior of the lid inscribed Uzura kogo, Seiseian, Rakuto, Shunko saku 鶉、香合、青々庵 洛東、春光作、春光 [an incense container in the shape of a quail, made by Shunko, Seiseian, Rakuto kiln, Kyoto] and sealed Shunko 春光.
