AN OHI WARE CERAMIC ‘RED-CRESTED CRANE’ KOGO (INCENSE BOX) Japan, Kyoto, late 19th century Boldly modeled, the bird shown resting with its wings folded against its body and its head turned to the right, with its elongated beak gently preening its plumage, vividly decorated with luminous enamels in varying shades of blue, black, purple, and red. The interior is finished with a clear, transparent glaze, whereas the underside is left unglazed, revealing the warm, earthen-toned ceramic body beneath.
