MAKUZU KOZAN: A LARGE POLYCHROME-ENAMELED STUDIO CERAMIC ‘DRAGON AND PHOENIXES’ BOWL By Makuzu Kozan I (1842-1916), sealed Makuzu Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Skillfully modeled, of oval form, with deep, gently rounded sides supported on a splayed foot and rising to a gently incurved rim, formed by two stylized phoenixes positioned on opposite sides, their heads proudly uplifted, defined by prominent crests and elongated beaks, while their extended wings appear to embrace the rim of the vessel. The surface strikingly decorated in vivid overglaze enamels of varying shades of cobalt blue, iron red, turquoise green, and gilt accents, all applied over a clear, finely crackled transparent glaze. The interior presents a four-clawed dragon coiling amid the Eight Auspicious Symbols, while the exterior presents further dragons in opposing compositions, interspersed with additional propitious emblems and floral motifs. The phoenixes enriched with shippo and wave-like patterns. The underside sealed with the maker’s mark reading Makuzu[...], only partially legible due to a burst air bubble in the glaze.
