MATSUURA: A FINE AND LARGE POLYCHROME ENAMEL SATSUMA STYLE CERAMIC ‘MARINE LIFE’ VASE By Matsuura, signed Matsuura Japan, c. 1900, Meiji period (1868–1912) Of elegant baluster form, tapering gently toward the foot and rising to a waisted neck with an everted rim. The creamy crackled ground finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt with a lively marine scene depicting fish, crabs, aquatic plants, and other delicacies, rendered with delicate shading and naturalistic detail. The composition is framed by geometric ornamental bands around the neck and foot, while the rim is embellished with three circular reserves enclosing stylized brocade patterns. The foot ring impressed MATSUURA. HEIGHT 32.6 cm The refined naturalistic painting and carefully balanced decorative scheme reflect the sophisticated taste of Meiji-period export ceramics, recalling the celebrated works of Makuzu Kozan (1842–1916). Like Kozan’s Yokohama wares, the present vase combines an elegant vessel form with finely rendered pictorial decoration, demonstrating the period’s pursuit of technical excellence and the integration of traditional Japanese painting aesthetics into ceramic art.
