HODODA: A LARGE SATSUMA CERAMIC DISH By the Hododa workshop, signed Hododa seizo Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely potted, with shallow, gently rounded sides supported on a short, tapered foot. The interior lavishly decorated in vibrant polychrome enamels and extensive gilding, with differently shaped reserves enclosing densely populated scenes of everyday life, including groups of courtiers, musicians, merchants, and peasants, all interspersed with smaller square panels containing diverse foliate designs. The composition framed around the rim by multiple decorative bands with fluttering butterflies and additional floral motifs set against a diapered ground. The underside covered with a finely crackled, transparent glaze, revealing the cream-colored ceramic body beneath, and signed within a rectangular reserve HODODA seizo [made by the Hododa workshop].
