A PAIR OF MASSIVE SATSUMA CERAMIC ‘WARRIORS AND BEAUTIES’ VASES Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Each skillfully potted, the square-section body with gently convex sides supported on a subtly waisted foot and rising to a similarly contoured neck with a tapered rim and broad circular mouth. The surfaces richly decorated in vivid polychrome enamels and extensive gilding, each face featuring reserves enclosing alternating scenes of elegantly attired beauties, samurai, and courtiers beneath maple branches beside tranquil lakes and mountain landscapes. The panels surrounded by dense floral ornament and scrolling tendrils, centered above and below with rounded medallions depicting stylized phoenixes. The decorative scheme extends seamlessly across the foot and neck, further enhanced by key-fret borders and foliate lappet bands with chrysanthemum crests encircling the rim.
