FUKUGAWA CHUJI: A MAGNIFICENT ARITA PORCELAIN ‘HINA DOLLS’ VASE By Fukugawa Chuji (1871–1934), signed Fukugawa Chuji Japan, early 20th century, Meiji period (1868–1912) to Taisho period (1912–1926) The ovoid body tapering gracefully toward the foot and rising to a short waisted neck with an everted rim, finely decorated in underglaze blue, polychrome enamels, gilt, and iron-red. The front is applied in low relief with a pair of hina dolls, delicately modeled and richly decorated, set against a ground of kikko-hanabishi (tortoiseshell floral diamond) pattern, while scrolling karakusa clouds envelop the shoulder and neck. The underside inscribed Dai Nihon Hizen Arita FUKUGWARA CHUJI sei [Made by Chuji Fukugawa, Arita, Great Japan]. HEIGHT 33.5 cm Fukugawa Chuji (1871–1934) was the founder of the Fukugawa porcelain company and the second eldest son of Fukugawa Eizaemon, a prominent Arita porcelain producer. Awarded the gold medal at the Paris International Exposition in 1900, he played a central role in establishing Fukugawa’s reputation for exceptionally refined porcelain, which was exported widely to Europe and America and received international recognition at major world fairs.
