A FINE PAIR OF POLYCHROME-GLAZED PORCELAIN ‘SHACHIHOKO’ FIGURES Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Each boldly modelled, with a sinuous body extending into a flowing tail fin and a powerful dragon head with a long mane, bearing a vicious expression defined by a pair of bulging eyes, a prominent muzzle, and a gaping mouth revealing threatening dentition, framed by curling protuberances. The surface strikingly decorated with vivid polychrome enamels, predominantly deep cobalt blue, accented with details in coral-red, turquoise-green, and gilt. The central curl of the body fitted with a metal loop for mounting on its corresponding stand. HEIGHT 33.2 cm (each incl. stand), LENGTH 35.7 cm (each) Each with a fitted presentation stand. Shachihoko is a mythical sea creature from Japanese folklore, traditionally depicted with the head of a dragon or tiger and the scaled body of a carp. Usually rendered in black or dark grey, the creature is associated with the cold northern seas. Its large fins and upright tail extend skyward, while the dorsal ridge is lined with sharp spines. According to legend, the Shachihoko possesses the ability to swallow vast quantities of water, summon clouds, and command rainfall. Despite its marine origin, the figure is most commonly found as an architectural ornament placed atop the roofs of castles and temples, often oriented upside down. In this context, the Shachihoko served both as a protective talisman against fire and as a symbol of authority and prestige.
