† A RARE SUE WARE NATURAL ASH-GLAZED SAKE CUP Japan, Nara period (710-794) or later Finely thrown, with deep, gently rounded sides resting on a short foot with a recessed base. The surface exhibiting a uniform charcoal tone with and a mineral-rich texture resulting from the deoxidation of the stoneware during firing, with subtle concentric striations marking the action of the wheel used to shape this small vessel. HEIGHT 2.6 cm, DIAMETER 8.3 cm With an associated wood storage box. Sue ware marks a turning point in the history of Japanese ceramics, representing a departure from traditional earthenware production. Japanese artisans began using the wheel for shaping clay during the seventh and eighth centuries, as shown by the even walls of this small bowl and the subtle striations on them. Sue ware was fired in simple Korean-style anagama kilns, single tunnel-like chambers partially embedded in hillsides, at higher temperatures than previously achieved, approximately 1000 to 1200 degrees Celsius. These high temperatures deoxidized the stoneware, giving it firmness and producing its distinctive dark-blue grey or charcoal-white color. Techniques for producing Sue ware arrived from the late fourth century through Korean pottery methods using wheels and kilns, themselves derived from Chinese ash-glazed ceramics. Because Sue ware was sensitive to heat, vessels were mainly made for storage or presentation rather than cooking. Typical forms include jars, pots, and ewers for preserving food, as well as dishes, pitchers, and vessels for serving. Stylistically, potters abandoned the characteristic curving forms of the Kofun period (c. 300-710) in favor of rectilinear profiles inspired by contemporary Chinese metalwork of the Tang dynasty (618-907), as can also be seen in the form of the present lot.
