YAMAMOTO CHIKURYOSAI I: A FINE ‘KARAMONO’ BAMBOO AND RATTAN HANAKAGO (FLOWER BASKET) By Yamamoto Chikuryosai I (Shoen, 1868–1945), signed Chikuryosai tsukuru Japan, Taisho period (1912–1926) Of ovoid form, finely woven from bamboo and rattan in alternating plaited and openwork patterns, rising from a neatly finished base to a slightly flared neck with a tightly bound rim. A broad band of open latticework encircles the midsection, contrasting with the densely woven upper and lower sections. The tall arched bamboo handle is secured at the shoulders by finely bound rattan loops. Signed underneath CHIKURYOSAI tsukuru [made by Chikuryosai]. With a bamboo otoshi (water container). HEIGHT 49.5 cm With a wood tomobako (storage box) inscribed Karamono o mosu hanakago [Flower basket modeled after a Chinese piece]. The term karamono, literally “Chinese things,” refers to Chinese objects and Japanese works inspired by Chinese forms, techniques, and aesthetics. In Japanese bamboo art, karamono baskets typically emulate imported Chinese flower baskets through formal silhouettes, dense weaving, and traditional construction methods. Born in Osaka, Yamamoto Chikuryosai I, also known as Yamamoto Chikuryusai I, was a frequent prizewinner at major exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris. Alongside Iizuka Rokansai and Tanabe Chikuunsai I, he was among the bamboo artists singled out for praise by the German architect and design theorist Bruno Taut. Reflecting his activities as both an artist and retailer, Chikuryosai produced works in a broad variety of styles and techniques.
