Ɏ MINGYOKU: A SUPERB IVORY OKIMONO OF AN EAGLE ABOUT TO ATTACK MONKEYS By Mingyoku, signed Mingyoku Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Elaborately carved as a lively group of monkeys gathered in peaceful revelry beneath a large taiko drum raised on a rocky pedestal. Two larger monkeys, each wearing an eboshi, hold a sake bottle and cup, their convivial gathering abruptly interrupted as they become aware of the eagle looming above. The drum is meticulously rendered with mokume detailing, rows of studs, and dragon motifs to either side, while dense clusters of ivy cascade around the stand and across the composition. Its imposing form evokes the great war drums whose silence could signify peace and security, making the monkeys’ carefree celebration beneath it all the more poignant. Perched dramatically atop the drum, the eagle spreads its wings and lowers its talons, poised to strike, transforming the scene from one of merriment into sudden alarm. Signed underneath MINGYOKU HEIGHT 14 cm Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number AT 26-B-0181).
