Ɏ JUGYOKU: A FINE IVORY OKIMONO DEPICTING SHOKI AND THREE ONI By Ryukosai Jugyoku II, signed Jugyoku 寿玉 Japan, Edo (Tokyo), late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Superbly carved in the round, the composition depicts Shoki, the legendary demon queller, captured in a dynamic and commanding stance. He brandishes a sword in his right hand while forcefully restraining an oni with his left, simultaneously pinning another beneath his foot. A third and fourth oni are shown in animated retreat, fleeing and hiding in terror. Behind Shoki stands an altar table set with a Chinese-style incense burner, adding narrative depth and cultural context to the scene. The figure is richly detailed: the flowing robes and hair are finely incised and enhanced with sumi staining, while the hems are decorated with elegant keyfret patterns. The expressive faces are expertly rendered, with pupils inlaid in dark horn, lending vitality and intensity to the figures. Signed to the underside within a raised rectangular reserve JUGYOKU. LENGTH 10 cm, HEIGHT 11 cm Ryukosai Jugyoku II was active in Edo (Tokyo) during the mid to late 19th century and is best known as a master netsuke carver. His work frequently explores dynamic figural subjects, including the popular theme of Shoki subduing oni, which appears across his oeuvre in both netsuke and larger carvings such as the present piece.
