HARA SHUGETSU: A FINE AND LARGE WOOD OKIMONO OF SHOKI Lineage of Hara Shugetsu, signed Hara Shugetsu saku Japan, Edo (Tokyo), 19th century, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely carved as Shoki, the legendary demon queller, standing in a powerful and dynamic pose with one foot advanced and his head turned sharply to one side, his fierce expression heightened by finely double-inlaid eyes. He grips a sword in his right hand while the matching scabbard is slung across his back. Shoki is dressed in elaborate official robes with deeply undercut sleeves, the hems richly embellished with scrolling cloud designs and keyfret borders, the voluminous drapery falling in elegant, rhythmic folds. Signed underneath HARA SHUGETSU saku [carved by Hara Shugetsu] with an inlaid square seal (now lost). HEIGHT 22.3 cm The name Hara Shugetsu was borne by several generations of carvers active in Edo, the lineage being best known for the production of finely carved wood netsuke. Although okimono by the family are occasionally encountered, they are considerably rarer than their miniature carvings and are seldom found on this scale. The present work is therefore particularly notable, combining a good size with refined workmanship, expressive carving, and the confident, sculptural treatment characteristic of the Shugetsu school.
