A LARGE AND POWERFUL WOOD FIGURE OF A WARRIOR Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved from attractively grained wood to depict a fierce warrior in a crouching pose, his powerful body compact and seated with both legs bent, his powerful arms showing bulging muscles and with clenched fists, the face rendered with a fierce expression, furrowed brows, and tightly pursed lips, framed by swirling locks of hair carved in high relief. The reverse is carved with an angled section designed to allow the okimono to be placed securely at the corner of a ledger or display stand. This sculpture may be an unusually fierce and bold representation of Kintaro, the mythic child hero known for his extraordinary strength and courage. Kintaro, often depicted with wild hair and a muscular build, was raised in the mountains by the supernatural being Yamauba.
