† A ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) CONTAINING A VERY FINE BRONZE FIGURE OF FUGEN BOSATSU, EDO PERIOD Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely cast, the bodhisattva seated in dhyanasana atop a lotus throne emerging from cresting waves, his hands joined before the chest in gassho (anjali mudra), dressed in loose-fitting robes and a billowing scarf, the face with a serene expression, the hair pulled up into a high chignon behind the tiara, all backed by a tall mandorla decorated with dense swirling clouds. The revolving cylindrical shrine set on a waisted lotus pedestal and surmounted by a canopy of swirling clouds supporting the domed roof topped by a crystal jewel finial secured by flame-form metal fittings. The doors fitted with richly incised foliate-form gilt-metal fittings. All raised on a separately carved, tiered, circular, balustraded base decorated with scrolling foliage, cloud designs, and geometric and floral motifs.
