A FINE LACQUER ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) CONTAINING THE GILT TRIAD OF AMIDA RAIGO, 18TH CENTURY Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Amida seated in dhyanasana with hands in mida no join on an elaborate lotus dais and backed by a mandorla with scrolling clouds, flanked by the bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi, kneeling on shorter lotus thrones, one holding a lotus blossom, the other with hands in anjali mudra. Their tiered thrones neatly carved with lobed cartouches revealing geometric patterns alternating with floral decorations. All framed by a lobed apron detailed with clouds to the upper side. The shrine with double-hinged doors, covered in lustrous black lacquer with chased metal fittings in form of lotus blossoms. HEIGHT 28.1 cm Raigo, literally ‘welcoming descent’, is a central concept in Pure Land Buddhism referring to the belief that Amida Buddha descends from the Pure Land of Sukhavati at the moment of death to guide the devotee’s soul to rebirth. Often accompanied by bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi, Amida is depicted arriving on gold and purple clouds, symbolizing divine assurance and a peaceful transition to the Pure Land.
