A LACQUER ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) CONTAINING AN EARLY WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI, HEIAN PERIOD Japan, the figure 11th-12th century, Heian period (794-1185), the shrine Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved, Amida stands in samabhanga with the hands held in raigo-in (vitarka mudra), loosely draped in monastic robes opening at the chest and cascading in neatly carved folds, the serene face with downcast eyes, the head surmounted by a high ushnisha. The deity stands atop an elaborate gold-lacquered lotus base, backed by circular halo, within a black and gold-lacquered shrine of typical form.
