A STONE DOJI STELE OF KANNON, DATED 1806 BY INSCRIPTION Japan, dated 1806, Edo period (1615–1868) The stele finely carved in relief with the standing figure of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, her hands joined before the chest in anjali mudra. Her hair is gathered into a high chignon centered by a seated image of Amida Buddha, while her softly modeled body is enveloped in loose, flowing robes. The figure is flanked on either side by inscriptions, the right side recording the date and circumstances of dedication, and the left side giving the posthumous Buddhist name.
